Learn to Skate/Figure Skating
Whether one dreams
of figure skating, playing hockey, speed skating, or having fun skating on a pond, skating
lessons provide the fundamentals upon which these goals can be accomplished. Each year
hundreds of skaters participate in the Skating Club of Maine - Coastal Regions Learn-To-Skate
or Figure Skating programs to pursue their dreams.
"Skate America."
WThe Skating Club of Maine (SCM) was established over 30 years ago. Ever since,
SCM has provided programs and organized events that encourage participation and
achievement in the sport of figure skating. In 1986, SCM hosted the nationally
televised competition, "Skate America!" In addition to the SCM-Coastal Region's Learn
to Skate and Figure Skating Programs, the SCM provides opportunities for private or
semi-private skating lessons, test sessions, clinics, competitions, and ice shows.
The Skating Club of Maine is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization supported primarily by
volunteers. Our home ice is at the Midcoast Recreation Center (MRC) in Rockport, but we
are a totally separate entity supporting our programs through class fees, shows and
fundraising events such as car washes, yard sales, and bake sales. Our objective is
to provide a reasonably priced, high quality skating program that enables our students
to accomplish their goals.
The SCM is excited to announce that Melissa Emerson and Mathea Daunheimer will Co-Direct
the Coastal Region this year. Melissa Emerson is a former Disney on Ice feature skater
and holder of US and Canadian Gold Medals in Freestyle & Dance. Mathea Daunheimer has taught
Learn to Skate lessons as well as Speed and Figure Skating for nearly 20 years. She has
competed nationally as an adult skater and has a strong interest in music and choreography.
The Coastal Region's excellent coaching staff also includes our senior pro, US Figure Skating
Hall of Fame member and Olympic Bronze medalist Nancy Luddington Graham; Gold level Dancer,
Rebecca Hotelling; and experienced coaches Mark Ellis, Tanya Quigley, Terry Kuzell, Kaitlin
